Safe and effective winter protection of the spillway hatch at the upper Bjurfors hydroelectric power plant

We at Linnovation are proud to have delivered a successful project together with Statkraft at the upper Bjurfors hydroelectric power plant in the Ume River.

To winterize one of the power plant's discharge hatches, customer-specific heating panels, designed and manufactured using Linnovation's technology, have been installed during the period November to December 2024. The panels are strategically mounted downstream around and on the hatch to prevent ice formation on concrete columns (monoliths), hatch legs and racks.

The result? Problem-free opening and closing of the door even in severe cold.

With a total system power of only 27 kW, the panels can quickly and efficiently reach temperatures of up to 60–80°C if needed. This ensures operation even in harsh winter conditions, without compromising on energy consumption. The heating panels are the largest Linnovation has ever produced: each panel weighs approximately 400 kg and covers a full 10 square meters on each side of the hatch.

This is also the first time that heating panels have been installed downstream of a hatch with a capacity to release several hundred cubic meters of water per second – a challenge that was tackled with experience, ingenuity and good help from knowledgeable experts in various fields. Extra thanks to Peter at Norconsult, Jonas and Jesper from Mählers, Jonas at Belzona, Rune from Origon and the staff at Skellefteå Rostfria, without you it would not have been possible.

We are also happy to have once again received the trust of Statkraft (thanks Per and Sture) to carry out a project in hydropower. Two years ago we carried out a similar project together at another power plant and it is an honor to receive the trust again.

At Linnovation, we continue to work towards safer and more reliable solutions in wind and hydropower. We look forward to more exciting projects that can contribute to the development of sustainable energy.
